In 1936, Herbert 'Salty' Baker started a small petstore in the basement of  his home in Rumford, RI. What began as a personal hobby became a  place of local pet lovers to gather and purchase a variety of pets, namely  tropical fish and birds. In 1959 George Baker, Sr. built a store at 865  Warren Avenue in East Providence where it still stands, although quite  differnt than the original store.
In 1986, Michael G. Baker joined the business representing the fourth  generation of the Baker family. Most recently, Michael and his brother  Carlos, have coordinated the renovation of the feature areas of the  10,000 square foot superstore. The state of the art puppy showrooms and  playpens provide hours of entertainment for customers as well as a  comfortable and fun place for the over 75 puppies that are awaiting their  new homes!
